Payrolls Triple Estimates, Stress Model Says Not So Fast

Nonfarm payrolls printed 162K against a 56K consensus and ISM Services accelerated to 55.4, the strongest of the cycle so far. Yet our regime model flipped out of risk-on and the macro stress composite jumped from -31 to 12 the same day — a split between what the labor market is saying and what the internals are saying.

TL;DR — the read in bullets

Labor Market Blows Through Consensus

Nonfarm payrolls came in at 162K, nearly three times the 56K consensus estimate and well above the prior month's 21K. ISM Services PMI printed 55.4, above the 54.3 expected and up from 54.1 prior — an acceleration, not a plateau. The unemployment rate held at 4.1%, matching both the prior reading and expectations exactly.

The combination argues against the slowdown narrative that has dominated recent commentary. A payrolls beat of this size, paired with services expansion picking up rather than stalling, is the kind of print that typically pushes back against near-term rate-cut pricing.

Fed Voices Split on What Comes Next

One widely-read blog notes that Fed governor Waller argued for patience, citing "signs of disinflation" and saying he would be inclined to support holding the federal funds rate at its current setting if the trend continues, with the CPI print due over the next two weeks flagged as the determining data point (waller-urges-patience-as-bond-yields-signal-tightening-ahead-the-capital-spectat.md).

Another widely-read blog frames the divergence differently, quoting Fed Chairman Kevin's Jackson Hole remarks that this summer's inflation readings, while better than expected, "do not tell me that underlying trends have meaningfully improved" — a hawkish read the piece ties to a yield curve showing near-term resilience alongside rising longer-horizon caution (a-tale-of-two-yield-curves-treasury-signals-clash-on-the-outlook-the-capital-spe.md).

Today's payrolls and ISM prints feed directly into which camp gets reinforced. A beat of this size raises the bar for the disinflation case Waller is building, and hands ammunition to the hawkish read instead.
